ah, closure

You ever hear a song and think, hey, that sounds so much like some other song. But when you try to look it up, so that you can finally sleep nights again and have musical closure... there are just no resources for searches like that. So in typical EGR form, I started to make a list of these "separated twins", hoping that one day they could be reunited.

The tracks are listed in pairs with the "copy" or "sounds-like" first. In one case, there's even a set of triplets. In some instances a song will sound like an exact copy of the "original" (and it makes me worry about copyright infringement); in other cases, there's just a segment of the song that's reminiscent of the other. But either way, there's a certain satisfaction that's found by listening to the first track and then its resolution-sibling.

Oh and yes, it's no secret that some tracks are repeated from other EGR mixes. It just had to be done.

a response to solarmix7

This collection was originally part of EGR v.7, but I decided to separate it due to the general feel and genre of the songs. Another running buddy had put together a similar mix of songs, all female vocals remixed or set to trip-hop beats, described as very very mellow injury comeback music. I guess I've spent quite a bit of time recovering from injuries, since I took my cue from him and created a mix with a similar vibe.

my so-called musical renaissance

Let's face it: With the birth of my first child in 1991, I totally missed the  emergence of the grunge era. I'm not exactly sure how that happened, considering my musical life wasn't really filled with the themes from Barney and Lamb Chop & Friends... and of course Top 40 was never my style, so I found myself at a loss for what to listen to.

Fast forward ten years or so, and I'm really itching to progress musically. If not for the radio-friendliness of Incubus' "Drive", I really believe I would never have discovered anything from the decade I had missed. And it wasn't just grunge: industrial, wow! Now here was a style I could sink my teeth into. It was like new wave and electronic had Rosemary's baby. Oh, and don't even get me started on the goth stuff...

Basically any style that had the word "metal" appended to it caught my ear at this point. Nu-metal, alt-metal, goth-metal... even rap-metal was palatable. So of course I needed a collection of my faves of these "new" genres, as I played catch-up of my missed decade. And being a classical pianist at heart, there were still songs I gravitated to that didn't fall into those harsher and darker styles, hence the "mostly" part of this mix.

some more that were left, literally and figuratively

After the first couple mixes were done, I realized I also had second favorites by several artists that I really couldn't let go unacknowledged. This gave birth to the "b-sides" collection. Some are a little more left of mainstream, though my version of "mainstream" is rather to the left to begin with, as a rule.

And some are just plain quirky and ironic, and make me smile to think that I might be the only fan.

opening Pandora's box

Quite a lot of time passed between the previous mixes and this one. I think I had just run out of different music that I liked enough. But with my discovery of Pandora Radio, I now had so much more new music to explore, all based on what I already liked. So cool! Granted, many artists were quite obscure and one-hit wonders (o-nee-ders) at best, but still, I now had new tunes to collect and enjoy.
